The Operating Engineer I is responsible for performing independently, tasks of a skilled nature, necessary for the operation, maintenance, and repair and remodeling of Center buildings, grounds and equipment. Must be proficient in boiler operations and maintenance, mechanical, plumbing and Refrigeration skills and possess a class 3 boiler licenses or have the boiler experience necessary to qualify for a boiler licenses within 6 months. Additionally, should have working knowledge in at least two of the following areas: architectural, electrical, welding, HVAC, building automation, steam and hot water systems.
Individual will be assigned primarily Boiler Plant Operations, Maintenance and Repair and will have Watchstanders responsibilities that will include responding to freezer, incubator, or any other alarms that come up. Individual may also be assigned to work with and/or train apprentices and other OEs. Individual will work the day shift Monday through Friday 6:00am-2:30pm and may be required to work swing and or grave shift in accordance with the policies of the Department.
-As the day shift Watch Stander, you will need to meet with the grave shift WS when taking over the shift and pass on necessary information to the swing shift WS when leaving your shift
-Update the electronic log, pass-down log, e-mail, Outlook calendar, and work as a team player to keep everyone in the loop
-Work orders as assigned by your Lead
-Uses the Siemens Apogee, Direct Digital Control system to monitor and trouble shoot plant operations compressors, pumps and air Handlers located remote from actual plant and cleans Boilers and Cooling Towers
-Respond to system alarms as well as any radioed in from security
-Operate Multiple Boiler plants simultaneously
-Our facilities operate 24hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year
-Repair and Maintain, Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, Cooling towers, and other pieces of equipment typically found in a boiler room including boiler tear downs and tube cleaning
-Maintains piping systems including valve replacement, steam trap troubleshooting and repair, temporary and permanent leak repairs, including emergency clean ups
-Performs Boiler and Building rounds daily as required
-Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with the Lead, co-workers, and or Supervisor
-Attends weekly on-site training classes
-Participates in scheduled system shut-downs, drain downs, and system refill
-Inspects and repair pumps, valves, fans
-Replaces air and water filters for various types of equipment
-Responds to PEVCO pneumatic tube system and nurse call alarms at the SCCA clinic
-High School diploma or equivalent
-Four to six years’ experience in boiler room operations and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work or completion of at least two years of trade school and two years experience
-Must have current Grade III City of Seattle Boiler Operator License or be able to obtain one within 6 months
-Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License
-Physical skills necessary to climb, bend, stoop, lift and perform tasks utilizing ladders and scaffolds, etc.
-Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
-Dependable, on-time and proven good work habits
-Good communications skills
-Able to work a varied schedule including shift work
In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.
